The Ancient Road (Hærvejen) hiking and cycling routes in North Jutland guide you past several cultural and historical landmarks and are filled with scenic experiences.
In Mariagerfjord Municipality, the Ancient Road cycle route starts at Klejtrup Lake, heading north through Lindum Forest and past the Fyrkat Viking Museum near Hobro, where the route connects with Route 32 – Mariager Fjord Route. From there, the trail continues through Døstrup, Rold, and Arden to Store Økssø in Rold Forest.
Along the way, you’re free to take detours from the main route to explore more attractions, historical landmarks, and beautiful nature spots. For example, hike the PANORAMA trail – Denmark’s first certified hiking trail. This 10 km trail takes you from Hobro Marina to Bramslev Bakker and back, following the shoreline of Denmark’s Most Beautiful Fjord – Mariager Fjord.
Experience the Ancient Road either by bike or on foot. The routes vary between asphalt roads, gravel paths, and forest trails – with gently undulating terrain in places.
The cycle route through Mariagerfjord Municipality is approximately 40 km long.
Toilets and shelters are available at several points along the route.

From Arden, the Ancient Road continues north through the northern part of Rold Forest towards Rebild. From there, it winds across fields and meadows, crossing Lindenborg Stream, before reaching Aalborg with its green parks, historic architecture, charming old town, and a stunning waterfront along the Limfjord.
