Route 32 - The Mariagerfjord Route

Do you want to go bicycling on your holiday? Get some exercise, fresh air and a new perspective on the area. Experience the beautiful nature area surrounding Mariager Fjord. From Hobro the charming old town Mariager, to Hadsund crossing the bridge further on to the small marinas by the fjord.

Route 32 – Around Mariager Fjord

Cycle Route 32 takes you almost all the way around Denmark’s most beautiful fjord, Mariager Fjord, and is often referred to as the country’s most scenic cycle route. Along the way, you will experience stunning and unique natural gems, charming villages, fascinating cultural and historical sites, and picturesque landscapes.

The route is approximately 65 km long and winds along country lanes, gravel roads, highways, and cycle paths.

The tour around Denmark’s most beautiful fjord offers several highlights along the way. Experience, for example, Hobro Østerskov with its majestic trees, whose roots almost reach down to the fjord, or take a break in Mariager’s cobbled streets, where you might prefer to hop off your bike and explore the town on foot. Here, you can also go on an adventure to find Thomas Dambo’s large troll, Ivan Evigvår, who lives in Munkholm Park.

During the cycle tour, you can take breaks at several spots, enjoy the beautiful landscape, and explore cultural experiences in the towns you pass. Visit the idyllic town of Mariager and take a detour to Hohøj and Alstrup Krat – or make a stop in Dania and the market town of Hadsund. North of the fjord, you can also discover Villestrup Stream, Stinesminde, and Kielstrup Lake, or take a hike on the PANORAMA trail in Bramslev Bakker. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the views, take a rest, have a meal, or buy refreshments and supplies at various spots. For example, treat yourself to a delicious ice cream at the self-service Ice Cream Hut located right on the route between Stinesminde and Høllet.

Route 32 also takes you through Hobro, the largest town in Mariagerfjord Municipality, beautifully located at the innermost part of Mariager Fjord. In Hobro, there are plenty of dining options and great views from the harbor. You will also find numerous shops, cultural activities, and exciting experiences. The most famous attraction is the Viking Museum Fyrkat and Fyrkat Ringfort, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. At Fyrkat, you can dive into the Viking era in Denmark, explore the ringfort and its many fascinating archaeological finds, or visit the Viking Farmstead, where Viking life comes alive throughout the summer season. Here, the whole family can try out traditional Viking crafts and activities.

Relaunched in 2023

Mariager Fjord Route 32 was redesigned in 2023 to improve cycling conditions for its users. A new cycle path was built along the section between Skjellerup and Mariager, which also shortened the route slightly – by just a couple of kilometers. In addition, parts of the route were adjusted to make the section between Bramslev Bakker and Hobro more accessible.

The brochure can also be picked up at the tourist information office at Mariager Salt Center and at Øster Hurup Tourist Information, where we are available during school holidays to provide guidance and recommendations for your tour.

The route brochure also highlights alternative routes for sections with steep inclines or heavy traffic. There are suggestions for alternative detours that may better suit your preferences. For example, Route 116 to Ajstrup Bay, Route 18 around Hohøj south of Mariager, or the detour to Fyrkat southwest of Hobro (Route 32), where you can also join the Hærvej Cycle Route No. 3.

If you download the GPS files from Mariagerfjordguiden.dk, please note that they do not include the alternative routes. These can, however, be found in the brochure, where they are clearly marked.

Enjoy the ride and have a great trip!
